چکیده

Recently Zhang (2005) has proposed a model to account for the well established effect that the fraction of type-II AGNs is anti-correlated with the observed X-ray luminosity; the model consists of an X-ray emitting accretion disk coaligned to the dusty torus within the standard AGN unification model. In this paper the model is refined by including relativistic effects of the observed X-ray radiations from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole in an AGN. The relativistic corrections improve the combined fitting results of the observed luminosity distribution and the type-II AGN fraction, though the improvement is not significant. The type-II AGN fraction prefers nonor mildly spinning black hole cases and rules out the extremely spinning case.

Are Most Low-Luminosity AGN Really Obscured?

At low Eddington ratios (ṁ), two effects make it more difficult to detect certain AGN given a particular set of selection methods. First, even allowing for fixed accretion physics, at low ṁ AGN become less luminous relative to their hosts, diluting their emission; the magnitude of the dilution depends on host properties and, therefore, on luminosity and redshift. Second, low-ṁ systems are expec...

Unified Schemes for Radio-Loud Active Galactic Nuclei

The appearance of active galactic nuclei (AGN) depends so strongly on orientation that our current classification schemes are dominated by random pointing directions instead of more interesting physical properties. Light from the centers of many AGN is obscured by optically thick circumnuclear matter, particularly at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. In radio-loud AGN, bipolar jets emanating...

Cosmological evolution of compact AGN at 15 GHz

Aims. We study the uniformity of the distribution of compact flat-spectrum AGN on the sky and the evolution of their relativistic jets with cosmic epoch. Methods. A complete sample of compact extragalactic radio sources at 15 GHz was recently compiled to conduct the MOJAVE program. The MOJAVE sample comprises 133 radio-loud flat-spectrum AGN with compact relativistic outflows detected at parsec...

Hard X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution of nearby AGN: INTEGRAL all-sky survey

Aims. We study the hard X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution of local (z ∼< 0.1) active galactic nuclei (AGN) and discuss the implications for AGN cosmological evolution and for the cosmic X-ray background (CXB). Methods. We use the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to perform a statistical study of a representative sample of nearby AGN. Our entire all-sky sample consists of 1...

A universal scaling for the energetics of relativistic jets from black hole systems.

Black holes generate collimated, relativistic jets, which have been observed in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), microquasars, and at the center of some galaxies [active galactic nuclei (AGN)]. How jet physics scales from stellar black holes in GRBs to the supermassive ones in AGN is still unknown. Here, we show that jets produced by AGN and GRBs exhibit the same correlation between the kinetic power c...
